DC Man Charged After Baby Kills Himself With Unsecured Gun: Police

A DC man has been charged with murder following the death of a baby who accidentally shot himself after getting ahold of an unsecured gun, authorities say.

Legend Wheeler, 1, was pronounced dead after accidentally shooting himself in a home in the 2300 block of Chester Street, Southeast on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021, according to Metropolitan police.

On Tuesday, Aug. 23, authorities arrested JD Wheeler, 23, in connection to the death of baby Legend, officials announced.

Police say that the firearm had been left unsecured in the home at the time Legend had gotten ahold of it, tragically ending his life.

JD Wheeler has been charged with second-degree murder.
